- SEIZURE: Falling over, twitching, urination, defecation, drooling, becoming stiff/rigid, staring into space, biting at invisible things
- AFTER A SEIZURE: Disorientation, appearing to be blind, walking into walls
- Make sure your pet is in a safe place
- Keep your hands away from the pet's mouth and do not disturb the pet
- Remove other pets from the area
- Record the time the seizure starts and ends
- Call your vet if this is a first seizure, if it lasts longer than 3-4 minutes, if seizures repeat, or if your pet is not recovering after a seizures.
- Seizures lasting longer than 4 minutes require emergency medical intervention, as they can cause high body temperatures and brain damage.
- If a seizure is lasting longer than 4 minutes, wrap the pet in a cool wet towel on your way to the vet's office.
- If your pet loses consciousness and stops breathing, begin CPR
- Do not attempt to restrain your pet
- Do not attempt to hold your pet's tongue - your pet will not swallow his/her tongue!
- Do not slap, throw water on, or try to startle your pet out of a seizure. The seizure will end when it ends.
